In the Heart of the Old Town
The Castle of Ioannina is one of the most important and oldest fortified fortified monuments in Greece, with its foundation dating back to the 6th century AD, during the reign of Emperor Justinian. Built in a strategic location, next to Lake Pamvotida, it served for centuries as a center of administration, defense, and culture.
During the rule of Ali Pasha, the Castle experienced particular prosperity, becoming the administrative and political center of a wider region with strong influence. Within its walls, important stories and legends unfolded, while different eras and cultures developed in parallel, with the contribution of Muslims, Christians, and Jews.
The Castle still preserves its unique structure today, consisting of sections that reflect different stages of its development. The outer enclosure surrounds the castle town, while inside, the two citadels stand out: the north-eastern one, where the Aslan Pasha Mosque dominates, and the south-eastern one, known as Its Kale, which is directly connected with the era of Ali Pasha.
The old city that developed within the walls still preserves elements of its historical identity, creating an environment where the past meets the present. Covering an area of almost 200 acres and with a perimeter of about 2 kilometers, the Castle is a place full of memories, images, and stories.
Today, the Castle of Ioannina is not merely a historical monument, but a living place that continues to tell the story of the city, combining culture, architecture, and timeless identity.
